Lyndhurst beat Chigwell by 5 wickets

Match Report

Lyndhurst produced a fine run chase of 188-5 to beat a strong Chigwell outfit.

Opting to field first, Lyndhurst struggled early doors with both of Chigwell's openers posting decent scores. The breakthrough eventually came with a catch from Jeff. The batsman hadn't seen the wily fieldsman move around to long on, and, in fairness, nor had the bowler JJ, but he was happy to pick up his first wicket of the season anyhow.

After this opening partnership Lyndhurst picked it up in the field, the one notable exception to this being a drop from Romford FC manager and reluctant cricketer Paul Martin. Stick to football matey. Both Liams and Kieran also chipped in with tight spells while Alfie cleaned out the middle order with 4-45 to leave Chigwell 184-6 at the tea declaration.

Alfie and James were dismissed fairly early on, but Jeff and Liam G put on a good partnership to steady the ship. When Liam was out and JJ came in Lyndhurst needed 110 at around a run a ball.

This was when something quite extraordinary happened. Jeff hit a 6. Do not adjust your monitor, you read that correctly. Not since the hazy days of 2004 has the great man opened his shoulders, but for some reason he did so on a fateful afternoon in Roding Lane. Yes, the boundary was short and yes, it was more like a top edge than a meaty blow, the crowd was nevertheless stunned into an awed silence.

When Jeff finally went snicked to the keeper, Liam Clay came to the crease and provided a valuable partnership to edge Lyndhurst closer, including a dreamy straight drive over the bowler's head. Kieran came in and steered us home, with JJ hitting the winning runs to end up 64 not out.

Everyone chipped in to produce another great team performance. This is shaping up to be one of the best seasons in recent memory, and if we keep playing with the same commitment and determination as we have so far this year, there are many wins to be had in the near future.
