Belhus beat Lyndhurst by 5 runs

Match Report

On the day when England threw away the ICC Champions Trophy, Lyndhurst capitulated even more spectacularly than their national side, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

A committed fielding display, particularly an inspired performance at gully from Stefan, and regular wickets kept Belhus to 167, around 20 more than Lyndhurst would have liked, but also a total which they felt confident of chasing. Alfie and Matthew picked up two wickets each, with Kieran picking up one and Stefan likewise in another impressive bowling display.

At 113-0 Lyndhurst were cruising, with Alfie and Jeff both making half-centuries, but Alfie's dismissal marked a turning point. James, Liam and debutante Kenny added a few each, and even at 144-4 Lyndhurst were firm favourites. But the wickets kept tumbling, and after JJ's golden duck batting at 10, it was all down to Speedy and Kev, needing 9 off the final over. Unfortunately it proved too much and Lyndhurst were sent to an unlikely 5-run defeat.

This capitulation in the batting department is all-too-familiar for some of the longer-serving Lyndhurstians, but even by their standards, this ranks amongst the most spectacular. Hopefully lessons will have been learned along the way and the good bowling/fielding performances will be matched with the bat in future.
