Lyndhurst beat East Hanningfield & Great Burstead by 29 runs

Match Report

A fine all-round display was good enough for Lyndhurst to recapture the Cup from newly merged East Hanningfield & Great Burstead in a match shortened by adverse weather.

The foundations were laid in a season's best opening partnership of 125 between Alfie and Jeff, either side of a 100 minute rain delay during which tea was taken early. Alfie was eventually caught in the deep for a fluent 65 from 69 balls. Jeff flew along too, scoring 48, although the second wicket partnership of 32 was mainly scored by Chay, with 29 from 18 balls. The run rate was not sustained as the middle order collapsed somewhat, but JJ and on-loan Jenky finished the innings not out with 196 on the board, close to a run a ball.

Neither Alfie nor JJ could get the breakthrough with the ball, though Jeff, who performed superbly behind the sticks, was able to dismiss the dangerman with a clever underarm run-out. Perhaps he should take up bowls once his cricket career is finished! Lyndhurst were keeping East Hanningfield to five runs an over with excellent pressure in the field, in particular Keith at short third man and JJ in the covers, showing the youth section how it's done. Inevitably wickets started falling as the Hanningfield batsmen tried to kick on, Liam and Jenky being the main beneficiaries with two and three wickets respectively. The other wicket was from Matthew's solitary good ball, which found the edge with pappa Richards dutifully taking the catch.

As the overs counted down Lyndhurst were able to keep it tight, taking catches with aplomb and chasing balls to the boundaries with seemingly endless energy. Alfie's first cup match as captain was ultimately successful, and deservedly so after a great showing from one and all. Congratulations Lyndhurst!
