Benfleet beat Lyndhurst by 29 runs

Match Report

A great innings from borrowed Aussie Emmanuel Parmakellis was not enough to prevent Lyndhurst from falling to their second consecutive defeat on a hot day in Benfleet.

The curse of 2011 continued with an injured Keith and an AWOL Warren dropping out on Sunday morning, leaving Lyndhurst with 9 men. Having been let down throughout the season by oppositions or the weather, the idea of having a full team on a sunny day was too good to be true! However, Lyndhurst did take to the field as an 11 with Emmanuel borrowed from Benfleet and 11-year old Tom applying himself brilliantly at fine leg for 40 overs.

The Benfleet openers both scored fifties, despite being on the ropes early on. JJ found Wilkins's edge twice in the first few overs, both chances going begging through the gap between wicket-keeper and first slip. Alfie bowled well, keeping it tight for his five overs. Both openers were eventually dismissed by George, who bowled with customary variety, and picking up three wickets with clever thinking. Chay bowled two good overs out of ten to end up with 1-60. Lyndhurst were sharp in the field on the whole, and managed to keep Benfleet to a gettable 216 on a wicket which wasn't doing much.

Lyndhurst's chase didn't start particularly well with Jeff unluckily playing onto his stumps again, but Alfie managed a fluent 47. Chay was bowled cheaply by a great slower ball accompanied by a tumble from Zammit, and Jupp looked in good form until he leathered one straight back at the same bowler, who looked more surprised than anyone to hold it. Parmakellis batted especially well against his own side, ending 78 not out and keeping Lyndhurst in with a shout of winning with his fast scoring, and nearly helped to save a draw.

As it happened, Lyndhurst ran out of wickets after George (who before the Britannic game had not been dismissed in 2 years) demonstrated a perfectly executed leave, but for the fact the ball hit his stumps. When Matthew was bowled, there were only 13 more balls in the day to save a draw.

All in all, a good game of cricket where Lyndhurst just didn't have quite enough to bring home the result.
